Squirrel damages electric breaker box in Iola; crews rerouted power | Local News | koamnewsnow.com

IOLA, Kan. (KOAM) - Electric crews rerouted power last week after a squirrel damaged wires at a breaker box.

KOAM Spoke with City of Iola electric crew employees Mike Phillips and Jim Baker. They say on September 21, a squirrel got to some wires coming from a breaker box at an Iola substation.  Cu Terminal Block

After the wires were damaged, it had a fireball effect around it and took down power to some residents. Crews got to the substation and were able to reroute power, restoring it no more than 40 minutes later to those who were impacted.

They say while surveying what happened, they saw the squirrel about five feet away.

At this time, there's no extra burden on the Iola electrical grid while they work to repair the damage. Phillips and Baker say they've requested parts to fix the breaker, but it's an old one so parts may not be available. If they can't fix it, the next step would be to get a new breaker box.
